Wilson's Story
When Canadian-born Thomas Wilson established a company in 1914, he could not have envisioned it would eventually become the gold standard in the game of tennis for many decades. Once a fledgling meat-packing company based in Chicago, Wilson Sporting Goods remains a powerful brand in tennis. Throughout the years, a high percentage of the world’s greatest players have used a Wilson racquet to win a championship at some point in their career.
1914
Under Pierre Babolat’s leadership, Babolat & Monnier, originally specializing in processing natural gut for various purposes, including sausages, surgical thread and archery, innovates by creating the first natural gut strings for racquets. This breakthrough occurs one year
after Walter Clopton Wingfield establishes the rules of lawn tennis and shortly after the production of the company’s initial badminton strings. Babolat then becomes the pioneering company dedicated to
racquet games, marking its entry into the world of sports.
1914 - 1935
Wilson served as President and Chairman of the Board of Wilson & Company for 35 years, transforming it into one of the 50 largest industrial corporations in America.
Initially successful in branding processed meat products, he later established prominence in the sporting goods industry. Wilson manufactures equipment for various sports, including American football, badminton, baseball, basketball, fast pitch softball, golf, racquetball, soccer, squash, and volleyball. While diverse, the company is particularly renowned for its leadership in tennis racquets and balls. The first Wilson racquet, made from second growth ash tree and a finecombed cedar handle, debuted at $0.75 in the company's founding year. By 1917, Wilson's catalog featured 28 models, including the Blue Ribbon made of white ash, walnut, and dogwood. This racquet boasted a distinctive oval shape.
The introduction of the Mahogany Leather Grip in 1935 revolutionized athletes' feel and grip in tennis handles.
1949
The Jack Kramer Autograph tennis racket revolutionized tennis with its powerful laminated ash construction. Between 1949 and 1981, over 10 million of these racquets were sold. Renowned players like John McEnroe, Tracy Austin, Arthur Ashe, and Billie Jean King used this racket, contributing to numerous Grand Slam victories during that period.
1967
The era of wooden racquets concluded with the debut of the first commercially accessible metal racquet, the Wilson T2000. Its endvuring durability and lightweight design have had a lasting impact on the construction of tennis rackets to date.
1969 - 1983
In 1969, the Billie Jean King Autograph Racquet, a perfectly balanced Strata-Bow racket, was used by Billie Jean King in her fifth Wimbledon victory. It featured special flexibility at the head and a long, strong handle to reduce torque. The racket was crafted from the finest ash with natural beech shoulder face layers and adorned with blue Speed-Flex fiber throat faces.
In 1975, the Chris Evert Autograph Racket, designed for professional women players, offered a lighter frame with optimized maneuverability and a more flexible grip for increased power on strokes. Made with famous American white ash and strata bow construction, it featured a 7" long handle for enhanced control, especially on two-handed backhand shots.
In 1980, Wilson adopted a revolutionary approach by manufacturing racquets with a new construction—Graphite and Kevlar. This innovation contributed to the widespread popularity of the Pro Staff racket, particularly among professional players.
1987 - 1990
The redesigned Wilson racket became the first tennis racket with a wider head, providing players with a significant increase in power. The introduction of Hammer technology by Wilson created the largest sweet spot in any racquet at that time. The Hammer 2.7si, weighing only 283g, stood out as one of the lightest and most powerful racquets of its era.
1993 - 1998
Wilson led the lightweight racquet market with the Hyper Sledge Hammer® 2.0, featuring the groundbreaking Hyper Carbon™ material initially utilized in the aerospace industry. This ultra-lightweight and exceptionally strong material marked a significant advancement in tennis racket design. Introduced in October 1998, the Hyper Sledge Hammer® 2.0 swiftly became the top-selling racquet in the USA.
2014
